September 2017

Our annual MEET THE FACULTY night is scheduled for Thursday, September 14th this year. This evening is designed for parents to come to school, get a feeling for the schedule your child follows each day and will also give you an opportunity to meet the people your child interacts with on a daily basis. You will follow a bell schedule and change classes just as your child does. Teachers will give a brief overview of their particular courses. Guidance counselors and administrators will also be on hand to meet you and answer any questions you may have.

College Night with the School Counselors: September 18th 6:00-7:00 pm
Financial Aid and College Financing
: September 19th 6:00-8:00 pm

Dear Parents & Guardians,

The Thornton Academy School Counseling Department will be hosting a Senior Family College Night on Monday, September 18th at 6:00 pm. This event is intended to help senior parents and students navigate the, sometimes complicated, college application process.

We will provide an outline of what to expect over the next few months and educate you further about Naviance, which will be the major communication tool for the entire college application cycle. Being informed is the best way to help guide and organize your student as he or she moves through the process. You will have plenty of time to ask questions after the presentation.

The following evening, on Tuesday, September 19th at 6:00 pm , the Finance Authority of Maine will present a Financial Aid and College Financing presentation designed to prepare families to navigate the college financial aid process; complete financial aid forms and determines the best way to pay for college. We will look at key strategies to minimize the cost of college and maximize college savings.  You will leave with many practical tools and resources to help you best prepare.

Please join us on these two evenings for what we hope will be informative and productive sessions.

Sincerely,

Jeff Camire, School Counselor

Abby More, School Counselor

Kelsey Ramsey, School Counselor

Meet our International School Counseling Team!

With more than a half-century of counseling and education experience combined, the International School Counseling Team serves the 200+ boarding students at Thornton Academy. The team recognizes the unique position our students are in while being educated far from home. Our approach is to provide appropriate supports, mindful reflection, and subtle challenge through the high school experience and often complicated college application process. The team knows that parents would do it if they could so in combination with the residential life office, Golden Edge, and the counseling office we strive to provide the best care possible. The three counselors work together and consult with one another almost daily. Your child will be assigned one counselor and that counselor will stay with him/her through the high school experience. The team works together to create programing and address unique needs of an international population.

Director of Guidance and school counselor, Kelley Hodgman-Burns is in her first year at Thornton Academy. Prior to that she worked as an International School Counselor, Middle School Counselor, teacher, dorm parent, coach, Associate Admissions Director and Residential Life Director in various schools in Maine and Europe.

Kelley received her BA from Clark University and advanced degrees in counseling and education at the University of Southern Maine.  She has led workshops titled “counseling the international student” to high school counselors and university support faculty. She is very excited to bring her experience and knowledge to Thornton Academy in a leadership role. She joins Steve Turgeon and Melanie Serrano to serve the international population at TA.

Steve Turgeon has been a licensed school counselor for over 30 years.  He has worked in private & public middle and high schools serving as a teacher, counselor, athletic director, principal and school board member. As a college counselor, Turgeon has assisted in the placement of hundreds of high school seniors into many of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the world.

Steve has a master's degree from the University Of New Hampshire Graduate School Of Education and a post-master's certificate of completion from the University of Southern Maine.

Melanie Serrano joins Thornton Academy's school counseling department following twelve years in the classroom. She has taught French and Spanish at both the high school and middle school levels, and has taught English language learners at the middle school level. Melanie has been internationally focused since her first trip abroad as a junior at TA (class of 1993). Since then she has traveled to 25 different countries and has also studied abroad. She is keenly aware of the challenges and opportunities that our international students face and is honored to help them navigate these. Melanie enjoys getting to know each of her students, learning what their interests are, and helping them create and achieve their goals for life after Thornton Academy. Melanie has a BA from the University of New Hampshire and an MA from the University of Southern Maine.

In Kelley Hodgman-Burns' freshly unpacked office, a kinetic sandbox, play dough, and "Pinch Me Dough" in lavender scent are centered on a small round table in an effort to "provide what (she) can to help students feel comfortable and at ease. (Faculty too, for that matter)."

Kelley joined the Thornton Academy team in June as the Director of Guidance. After serving at Fryeburg Academy for 20 years in many capacities including: intern, Director of Residential Life, School and College Counselor, coach, teacher, and Assistant Admissions Director, Kelley  is enthusiastic about her new role and the recognized value that Thornton has for school counselors.

She grew up in Yarmouth and has traveled the world. Kelley was drawn to TA because of the unique challenges it possesses as the largest Maine high school with a blend of international and local students. Kelley looks forward to using her experiences from Fryeburg, the Leysin American School in Switzerland, and Oxford Hills Middle School to blend residential and day student components. She appreciates the traditions Thornton has and looks forward to further developing processes and supporting a school counseling program (with some mighty fine school counselors and support staff!) that serves diverse needs.

A few "Quick Facts" on Kelley:

  • She is married to Bob Hodgman-Burns and has three daughters, Isabel (21), Anna Kathryn (17), and Lucy (13)

  • She has a BA from Clark University and MS from University of Southern Maine

  • She competed in and completed her first Tri for a Cure in 2017

  • Podcasts and a variety of music (including The Smiths or The Cure punctuated by 2017 summer anthem Despacito) entertain her on her commute to and from Fryeburg each day

  • Switzerland was her home for a year

  • Headmaster Menard and Kelley both completed the Extended Teacher Education Program at the University of Southern Maine and both interned at Fryeburg Academy, though their experiences did not overlap

  • Her running partner, Myles, is a rescue dog from the Conway Humane Society

  • She enjoys cooking and is a little obsessed with cooking shows. She works out to balance her love of good food!
